What can I convert MKV to?

MP4, MOV, WMV, AVI and more. MKV is the archivist's container: it holds anything, but few devices play it directly, so the usual reason to convert is to get a file that opens where this one does not.

Can a browser really open MKV files?

Not on its own - Chrome, Firefox and Safari only play some MKV files, depending on what is inside, which is why most in-browser converters turn MKV away or quietly upload it. Does converting lose quality?
