What can I convert AVI to?

MP4, MOV, WMV, WebM and more. AVI is an old Windows container that still turns up in archives and camcorder footage, so the usual reason to convert is to get a file that opens where this one does not.

Can a browser really open AVI files?

Not on its own - Chrome, Firefox and Safari cannot play AVI, which is why most in-browser converters turn AVI away or quietly upload it.
