Why convert AVI to MP4?

AVI is an old Windows container that still turns up in archives and camcorder footage. MP4 is the format everything plays, and the safe answer when you are not sure. Converting is how you move a file from the first situation to the second.

What will the MP4 file contain?

Is the picture re-encoded?

Yes. MP4 cannot carry the MPEG-4 (XviD or DivX) video an AVI file normally holds, so the picture is encoded again, at a quality setting high enough that the difference is hard to see.

Is the sound kept?

Yes. The audio track comes across with the picture - copied when MP4 can hold it as it is, converted when it cannot.

Can a browser really open AVI files?

Not on its own - Chrome, Firefox and Safari cannot play AVI, which is why most in-browser converters turn AVI away or quietly upload it.
