Why this one stays private

A photo's metadata is exactly the part you would not want a stranger to read: the GPS position of the place it was taken, often your home, the time to the second and the phone it came from. Uploading it to be told what is in it hands all of that over first. Here it is read in your browser and goes nowhere.

Does this work with JPG files?

Yes - that is what this page is set up for. JPG is where cameras and phones write EXIF, including the GPS position.

What can a photo's EXIF data reveal?

Usually more than people expect: the GPS coordinates of where it was taken, the date and time, the make, model and sometimes serial number of the camera or phone, the software that edited it, and any name or caption added to it.

Why does my photo show no location?

Either location was off on the camera when it was taken, or the app it passed through already removed it - most social networks strip it on upload, most messaging apps' 'send as file' options do not.
